Huawei, the world’s biggest producer of telecoms equipment, is under intense scrutiny after the United States advised allies not to utilize its technology due to fears it might be a car for Chinese spy surgeries.
“The tactical challenge of China’s place in the era of globalised technology is a lot larger than just one telecommunications equipment company,” Fleming, one of Britain’s top three spies, said in Singapore.
“it is a first order tactical struggle for us all,” he explained. “We have to understand the opportunities and threats from China’s technological deal.”
GCHQ is currently Britain’s main eavesdropping agency and has a close connection with the US National Security Agency and with the eavesdropping agencies of Australia, Canada and New Zealand in a consortium known as”Five Eyes”.
In what some have in relation to the Cold War arms race, the United States is worried that 5G dominance could provide any international competitor such as China an advantage Washington isn’t ready to accept.
5G, that will offer much faster data speeds and become the foundation stone of many industries and networks, is a revolutionary technology,” Fleming said.
“5G will be one of the most important and impactful technology of any age,” he stated, adding that he wanted a diverse provider market.
“A market merged to such an extent that there are only a tiny number of viable options won’t make for good cyber-security. That’s regardless of whether these choices are Western, Chinese, or from somewhere else,” Fleming said.
Guo said the United States failed to represent the whole planet and called for gear manufacturers, network operators and governments to work together to invent trusted standards to control cyber-security risks.
